A San Francisco fisherman who was found dead one day after he went missing off the San Mateo County coast was identified by a sheriff’s spokeswoman Tuesday (Oct. 2) as 62-year-old Carl Deng.
A second fisherman, Ping Tao Tsang, 55, of San Francisco, remains missing.
Family members of the missing fishermen who had been searching a remote shoreline north of Pigeon Point Light Station on Monday found Deng’s body on the beach at about 5:30 p.m., San Mateo County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Rosenblatt said.
A land-and-sea search effort led by the U.S. Coast Guard, with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office, was suspended at about 3:30 p.m. Monday. There were no immediate plans to restart the search, Lt. j.g. Joshua Dykman said.
Deng, Tsang and two other men were on board an 18-foot Striper fishing boat that left a marina near Candlestick Park at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Rosenblatt said.
Around 10:30 a.m., a large wave caused the boat to capsize about a mile offshore near the Pigeon Point Light Station.
Two of the fishermen were wearing life vests and managed to swim to shore and report the incident to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deng and Tsang were not believed to have been wearing life vests when the wave struck, and were reported missing, Rosenblatt said.
A Coast Guard helicopter and two 87-foot vessels scoured the water, and sheriff’s units searched a long stretch of remote beaches in southern San Mateo County before the search was suspended.
