A newly installed telescope will be the star of a community event at Ormondale School in Portola Valley on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m.

The new telescope is the result of a partnership between the Portola Valley School District and the Cork Institute of Technology’s Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork, Ireland. Astronomers and school children in both Cork and Portola Valley will be able to remotely use each other’s telescopes to view the night skies above their partner institutions.

During the Friday event, Blackrock astronomers will give an overview of the telescopes and sample images from the devices, according to Ormondale Principal Kevin Keegan.

The event will include a reception “to celebrate the relationship we have established with the Blackrock Castle Observatory and show our community’s appreciation,” the district wrote in an online announcement.

Ormondale School is at 200 Shawnee Pass
