Quick action on the part of employees at the Woodside Tennis Shop and the office of Dave Tanner’s home design and remodeling business put out a small roof fire at the Woodside Bakery shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.

Sparks from the stovepipe of the bakery’s pizza oven got through a spark arrester and landed on what is an old shake roof and ignited a shake, Mr. Tanner said.

The fire burned an area of between 400 and 900 square feet, said firefighter Javier Valdes of the Woodside Fire Protection District. Firefighters pulled off all the burnt shingles. With the age and dryness of the wooden roof, the fire damage could have been much worse, Mr. Valdes said.

The fire was fought from the roof. Julian Fernandez of the tennis shop vaulted up by way of standing on a fountain, Mr. Tanner said. Octavio Lopez and Josue Patricio, both of Mr. Tanner’s office, climbed up a permanently installed ladder at the back of the building. The three had a fire extinguisher from Mr. Tanner’s office and used it to put out the fire.

Though the fire was out, through a group effort, a hose was strung across the parking lot from the Emily Joubert garden center and the water used to hose down the roof, Mr. Tanner said. There were no injuries, he said.

Battalion Chief Rob Lindner of the Woodside Fire Protection District confirmed Mr. Tanner’s account. The incident lasted about an hour, the businesses were evacuated, but there was no damage to any business, he said.

The fire didn’t penetrate the roof, Mr. Tanner said.

Firefighters were on the roof to make sure the fire was out, Mr. Lindner said.
