Red umbrellas hung festively from the ceiling of the Menlo Park Senior Center while the girl scouts of Beechwood Elementary School sang carols at the center’s annual holiday party on Dec. 15.

The umbrellas overhead hinted at the roughly 130 packages under the tree, which contained umbrellas and blankets donated by Facebook to be distributed to the visitors at the Senior Center. The contribution was estimated to be worth roughly $2,000.

Lauren Swezey, sustainability and outreach manager at Facebook, announced that the gifts were intended as “a small token of appreciation for having us in your neighborhood.”

The donations from Facebook were not the only contributions from the community that will keep Menlo Park’s senior citizens warm this winter.

Little House, Menlo Park’s private senior center across town, organized a coat drive and brought about 60 coats of various sizes to the center’s visitors, said Avideh Yaghmai-Samarda, recreation supervisor at the Menlo Park Senior Center. The coat drive at Little House will go through the end of the year, she said.

  1. A number of commentators have spoken out against facebook. I know this is small, but couple this with The Chan-Zuckerberg announced donation (99% of their stock) along with their on-going donations…. Seems like Menlo Park has a pretty good neighbor.
