The votes are in: 87 percent of voting residents who live on Marcussen Drive in Menlo Park favor a residential parking permit program that bans parking for nonresidents between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., except on holidays and weekends.

Currently, parking is not allowed there from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on different parts of the road.

Marcussen Drive runs between Oak Grove Avenue and Ravenswood Avenue west of Middlefield Road near Menlo-Atherton High School.

The program will give each residence the chance to buy three parking permits from the Police Department. Permits will have to be displayed on parked vehicles.

The city invited residents on Pine Street to participate in a similar election, but the majority did not favor making changes to the parking.

The City Council on Aug. 29 unanimously approved the Marcussen Drive program.

  1. Why is permit parking needed on Marcussen? Will the problem now move to neighboring Pine and Noel? Than’s what usually happens when permit parking is required on one street but not on the nearby streets. People who take Caltrain and don’t want to pay the parking lot fee park on Noel, so maybe Noel is the next street to petition for permit parking.
