The Menlo Park City Council approved a $6,654 bonus for City Manager Alex McIntyre, 3 percent of his salary, on Oct. 10, and more money may be on the way.

The Oct. 10 decision was made with a 4-0 vote with Councilwoman Catherine Carlton absent.

The City Council is also scheduled to discuss a 5 percent raise for Mr. McIntyre during its Oct. 17 meeting.

With a 5 percent raise, Mr. McIntyre’s salary would rise to $232,890, up from $221,800. Under the terms of proposed contract changes, his job would be extended for two years to March 8, 2020. The terms also stipulate he could be eligible for a “non-PERSable” bonus (meaning the city does not have to make pension contributions for that amount) up to $14,000 around Oct. 1, 2018.

According to a staff report, Mr. McIntyre’s salary is 13 percent below the market median.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at 701 Laurel St. in the Menlo Park Civic Center. Access the meeting agenda here or watch the meeting online here.

  1. You gotta ask, “what has the City Manager done to deserve a raise?” Don’t be fooled by “the market” What is “the market”? Let’s give this some context instead of empty stats. (Market includes cities much larger than Menlo Park)

  2. I would like to know what criteria the Council uses to award bonuses. At a minimum the Council should state, “The City may award bonuses to management employees for …..” It would be even better to acknowledge exactly what Mr McIntyre did to earn his bonus. Hopefully the Council did not award a bonus just to try to adjust Mr McIntyre’s salary. That’s terrible HR practice in both private and public sectors.
