The Menlo Park-based Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula hosted a “Women’s Leadership Breakfast” fundraiser at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton on Nov. 14.
Speakers at the event, which had about 300 people in attendance, included physicians Michelle Sandberg, Odette Harris and Dana Weintraub. The event featured former club members Lindsay Black and Nancy Orocio, who shared their stories about how their club participation helped them succeed in school and pursue higher education.
Ms. Black, who participated in programs at the East Palo Alto clubhouse, talked about how the support she got at the club convinced her to go to college.
She attended Howard University and now teaches second and third grade in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Orocio told how her experiences in programs at the Redwood City clubhouse helped her envision attending college. A DACA recipient, she received a full scholarship at Santa Clara University and now works as an immigration counselor with Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County.
