Saying it is the best way to reach residents in an emergency, Atherton has begun a campaign to get more households to sign up for the San Mateo County emergency alert system and the town’s own alert system.

Atherton Police Chief Steve McCulley says it is easy to sign up for the San Mateo County emergency alert system online and for the town’s news flash alert system by going onto the town website’s “Notify Me” page and clicking on “Atherton Police Department” under “Alert Center.”

McCulley says in a regional disaster or local emergency, “quick efficient notification to our residents with clear and accurate information is the key” to keeping people safe.

The town currently has only 1,200 of its 7,200 residents signed up for the police department alerts, while only 900 are signed up for the county alerts, McCulley said.

“As a community of very engaged residents, I know we can and need to do much better than this in order to be prepared,” he said.
