Smoke may be visible Monday, July 31, along parts of Interstate Highway 280 in San Mateo County during a planned fire to reduce combustible vegetation at Filoli Historic House and Garden near Woodside, Cal Fire said Saturday.

Cal Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit will conduct the so-called prescribed fire to clear grass on the San Francisco Public Utility Commission’s Peninsula Watershed, which surrounds Filoli. The 23,000-acre watershed is a key source of drinking water for San Francisco.

Smoke may briefly be visible in communities including Woodside, Emerald Hills, San Carlos and Belmont, according to Cal Fire, adding that there was no need to call 911.

The fire agency said it conducted two controlled fires in San Mateo County on Friday, July 28, burning 5 acres on the face of San Andreas Dam and 15 acres of grassland at Filoli.

Filoli, owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a grand estate that includes 16 acres of formal gardens and hosts thousands of visitors each year.
