It’s no secret that many pets are scared by fireworks or other loud noises, and many often disappear or run away on holidays such as Independence Day or New Year’s Day.

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) is urging pet owners to take precautions to help keep their furry companions safe.

“Like many shelters across the nation, we receive numerous animals at our facility, especially dogs who become frightened by the sounds and sights associated with 4th of July fireworks and celebrations,” said Colleen Crowley, PHS/SPCA Communications Manager. “Dogs can panic and break through fences and gates. Lost dogs that make their way to us around this time often arrive scared and sometimes with minor injuries such as cuts on their paws. Some simple tips can help prevent this from happening.”

PHS/SPCA urges people to consider the following tips to keep pets safe on and around the 4th of July:

  • Don’t take pets to fireworks displays.
  • While at home, keep pets inside a room in the house and make sure blinds or drapes are drawn. Leave a TV, radio, or fan on to drown out the fireworks noise.
  • Make sure pets have current identification and/or a microchip. A microchip implanted just under the animal’s skin will ensure it can be identified. Microchips are available at the PHS/SPCA Coyote Point facility, 12 Airport Blvd. in San Mateo for $30. No appointment is necessary.
  • If you know from past experience that your pet will have severe anxiety caused by fireworks, you can consider talking to your veterinarian about giving your pet a mild tranquilizer.
  • If your pet becomes lost in San Mateo County, please visit the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Coyote Point facility, 12 Airport Blvd., San Mateo, on July 5th. This process must happen in person, as staff cannot positively identify animals over the phone.

“Following a few tips will help keep the celebrations happy for everyone, pets and owners alike,” said Crowley.

PHS/SPCA Hours are 11 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday and 11 am to 6 pm on the weekends.

PHS/SPCA will be closed to the public on the Fourth of July, although staff and volunteers will be caring for shelter animals during the holiday.
