Peninsula resident helps others grow produce at home

This week we’re highlighting two women who pivoted from tech to turn their passions into businesses.

San Mateo resident Ritu Shrestha grew up in Nepal, where she recalled everyone having a functional garden that grew food. After a two decade career in tech, she decided to start Backyard Nourish, where she uses her green thumb to help others create thriving edible gardens. No space is too small, she said, noting a mini herb garden fits perfectly on a window sill.

In Menlo Park, Vanya Weng is using skills she learned at a workshop at Le Cordon Bleu Paris to bake made-to-order sourdough loaves in all sorts of unique flavors – think strawberry-white chocolate, cheddar-jalapeno and chili oil-scallion. She worked as a software engineer for a decade and now hopes to use her creativity to build community.

Stay tasty,
Adrienne

Burger and a shake at Patty’s Retro Diner

If you’re craving something decadent and satisfying, I’d recommend checking out Patty’s Retro Diner – just be prepared for quite a wait. Besides the fact that Patty’s has some of the cutest ambiance on Broadway – black-and-white checkered floors, pink walls, baby blue cabinets and booths, a plethora of retro posters and knicknacks – the food is delectable.

I opted for the monthly special, the queso popper smash, which was meaty, cheesy, spicy and over-the-top in the best way possible ($16). It featured two crispy and caramelized smash patties with melty pepper jack cheese, jalapeno poppers, bacon, grilled green chiles, fresh pico de gallo and ooey gooey jalapeno cheese sauce on a toasted brioche bun.

If that wasn’t enough calories, I also had to try the monthly special shake, which was inspired by churros and tasted exactly as advertised ($12). Cinnamon sugar doughnut holes were blended into vanilla ice cream, creating these cinnamon-y chunks of goodness, and rich caramel added additional pockets of satisfaction.

At Patty’s, you order at the counter, take a number and pick a seat. I went on a weekend and was informed that there would be a 45-minute wait for the food, so I took the opportunity to walk along Broadway before returning. So if you’re thinking about going on a weekend, go early.

Patty’s Retro Diner, 1184 Broadway, Burlingame; 650-727-3672, Instagram: @pattysburlingame. Open Wednesday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
