History is one of those subjects that seems limitless, something you can explore from all different angles and never feel like you’ve learned all there is to know. We delve into it in school, poring over textbooks and memorizing facts, but historical sites are all around us — some are well known, while others hide in plain sight. Learning historical tidbits about the Peninsula and the Bay Area at large deepens my connection to the region I grew up in, and knowing how previous generations lived and how the area developed helps inform our place in the world today.
The San Mateo County History Museum has organized the upcoming Victorian Days Walking Tours, free guided excursions around the Peninsula highlighting local landmarks as well as spots off the beaten path. Take a trolley tour of Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, hop aboard a boat ride around Foster City or learn about the site of the last duel in state history located in Daly City — the tours kick off Saturday and wrap up at the end of August. The museum will also be hosting a special day devoted to the Victorian era in San Mateo County, complete with a tea where you can dine alongside historical reenactors. Read Edwina Dueñas’ story to learn how you can take part.
Turning back time,

Eats on the streets: What’s up with outdoor dining?
Although we in the Bay Area are lucky enough to be able to dine outdoors for much of the year, in the summer months you may find yourself wanting to enjoy the warm evenings and spend mealtimes outside all the more. Here are the latest policies from several cities on the Peninsula.

Congrats to Tami S. of San Mateo, who was the first reader to correctly identify where last week’s photo was taken (it’s Kohl Mansion in Burlingame!).
