A 75-year-old bicyclist who was seriously injured in a car collision in Woodside has died, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office announced on Monday, May 11.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office could not release his identity as they are still trying to notify his next of kin. The Sheriff’s Office said the cyclist died on May 10 at a hospital in Santa Clara County.

On May 1, deputies responded to a collision between a cyclist and vehicle near the 1400 block of Portola Road at around 12:15 p.m., triggering traffic delays for about three hours.

First responders transported the man, who was alive but unconscious, to a nearby trauma center.

“The Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere condolences with the family, friends and loved ones of the cyclist who tragically lost their life in this collision,” said the Sheriff’s Office in a written statement.

The Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team conducted a thorough investigation of the incident, the press release said. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Initial findings do not indicate alcohol or drugs to be a contributing factor to the collision, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 650-363-4911.

  1. I would love more detailed coverage from the Almanac here. An elderly community member dies and it seems to be treated as not a big deal.

How many crashes have occurred at this location? In the area?

Did the driver get so much as a ticket? Were they referred for retesting @ the DMV? What actually happened in the crash?

  2. Michael – there is a bicycle wheel at the site someone told me yesterday (not a white bike). Most of the injury accidents in Portola Valley involve a cyclist (unlike other San Mateo County jurisdictions) I cannot speak for Woodside, but as the primary author on our LRSP – you can see it here https://www.portolavalley.net/home/showpublisheddocument/20159/638989853846770000

The most common type of crash is bike comes down hill, car comes into the path of the cyclist and hits them. In Portola Valley and Woodside where there are many cyclists, even if the biker has the right of way you have to cycle very defensively and assume that at every junction a car or truck might pop out. On Portola Road, it is so rare for people to come out or go into Family Farm Road so the normal mode of operation for a biker is to relax cruising along Portola Road. However, the traffic is too fast for safety there – a dear cat, Rosie, was killed opposite Christ Church on Portola Road recently.

  3. This is a very sad situation and first thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman who died.

We need better training and awareness of drivers to ensure they are aware of, look out for *and recognize* all vehicle types before turning across traffic. The Bay area in general and Woodside/Portola Valley in particular is is a well known area for cycling.
