True Food Kitchen, a wellness-driven restaurant chain that’s been a tenant of Stanford Shopping Center since 2016, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Oct. 4. But despite the financial issues, the company maintains that the Palo Alto restaurant “is continuing to operate as usual,” according to a spokesperson.
“True Food Kitchen is continuing to operate through the restructuring process, with 34 restaurants across 14 states open and serving guests,” a True Food Kitchen representative wrote in an email. “The company is using the process to address its restaurant footprint and cost structure and position the business for the future.”

True Food Kitchen has permanently closed 12 restaurants as part of the restructuring and hopes that shutting down these restaurants and filing for bankruptcy will help keep the company in business, according to a press release published Oct. 5.
A list of unsecured claims included in the bankruptcy filing shows that True Food Kitchen owes Stanford Shopping Center $618,210.10 in rent. Simon Property Group, owner of Stanford Shopping Center, did not reply to a request for comment regarding the unpaid rent.

True Food Kitchen was founded in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2008, and the company opened its first Northern California location in the former Bloomingdale’s space at Stanford Shopping Center in 2016.
The menu focuses on seasonal produce and “anti-inflammatory whole-food cooking,” according to its website, with a variety of bowls, burgers, salads, sourdough pizzas and air-fried, gluten-free crispy chicken. The restaurant features a full bar, with cocktails, organic and sustainable wines, beer and more.
