Middlefield Road between James and Encinal avenues in Atherton was closed in both directions to car traffic due a traffic collision, police said shortly before noon on Wednesday, May 7.

The road reopened to traffic at 1:13 p.m. according to police.

The closure was expected to last until 2 p.m. Police asked residents to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

The effected section of Middlefield was directly in front of Encinal Elementary School in Atherton. The closure may affect people picking up students from the school. Encinal’s transitional kindergarten program ends at 12:20, which was during the closure. School ends for students in kindergarten through second grade at 2:35 p.m. and 3 p.m. for students in third through fifth grade.

The closure may also effect Menlo-Atherton High School students as school ends for them at 2:15 p.m. However, some students may be starting or ending school earlier due to AP testing which is currently scheduled.

This story was updated after police announced the road had reopened.
