Residents have reported seeing a mountain lion in two different areas in Palo Alto on Thursday and Friday, including a sighting near the Menlo Park border on Friday morning, according to the Palo Alto Police Department.
Police said that they had received two reports from residents on Sept. 24 about a mountain lion being seen in Midtown, near the intersection of Middlefield Road and Colorado Avenue. Palo Alto police officers and animal control officers responded to the area but did not locate the animal.
Earlier today, the department received an additional report of a mountain lion on the 1600 block of Sand Hill Road, near Oak Creek Avenue.
The mountain lion did not display aggressive behavior, police said. The department encouraged residents to stay aware of their surroundings and call the police if they see a mountain lion.
According to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, mountain lions attacks on humans are very rare. The department reported that since 1890, there have been six known fatal human attacks by mountain lions in California.
