Hassett Ace Hardware in Redwood City reopened Wednesday after a vehicle crashed through the front of the Woodside Plaza store in December, sparking a fire and causing months of repairs.

The store welcomed its first customer at 8 a.m. during a soft opening May 13, said Jocelyn Lovelle, the store’s spokesperson. Other customers soon filed in, including one named Juan and his daughter, who were nearly hit during the December incident, Lovelle said. Juan helped the driver get out safely and put out the fire, she added.

The store had been closed since Dec. 15 because of significant fire and water damage. No one was injured.

The rebuilt store will include an updated floor plan, a new entrance, reinforced bollards outside the store and expanded services for homeowners, contractors and business customers, according to a May 6 announcement from Hassett Ace Hardware.

“This rebuild gave us the opportunity not just to repair the store, but to make meaningful improvements,” owner Eric Hassett said in the announcement. “We’re excited to welcome everyone back.”

The Redwood City location is part of Hassett Hardware’s family-owned chain, which also has stores in Palo Alto, San Mateo, Carlmont, Half Moon Bay and Pacifica. Eric Hassett previously told the Pulse he hoped to reopen by May after the crash left the store with smoke, water and inventory damage.
