Law enforcement officials believed to be federal immigration enforcement officers took one man into custody after he was released from a San Mateo County jail on Wednesday night, Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
“The law enforcement personnel who took the person into custody were wearing exterior ballistic vests and other gear commonly associated with federal immigration enforcement officials, but we have not been able to identify which agency,” Corpus said in the prepared release.
She said the detainment happened around 9:30 p.m. on a public sidewalk in front of Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City.
Corpus reiterated that the Sheriff’s Office does not work with immigration enforcement or give information to immigration enforcement without a warrant. She said, however, the Sheriff’s Office can not prevent access to public documents.
“Since I took office in January of 2023, the Sheriff’s Office has not turned anyone over to ICE. Our mission is to serve all members of our community, regardless of their immigration status,” she said in the conclusion of her statement.
The press release did not identify the individual or why he was incarcerated at the jail. The Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for more information. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not respond to a request for comment.

Wonder how they knew he was being released?
Wonder what he did to go to jail when he was a presumably a guest in this country?
OMG, how DARE they arrest a man who came into this country illegally and then committed further crimes afterwards that landed him in the San Mateo County jail! What is this country coming to?!?
John Doe: Nobody said he shouldn’t be arrested for committing a crime. Where did you get that? Oh, that’s right, in MAGA world all undocumented immigrants are criminals. Never mind the FACT that the “crime” they supposedly committed is civil.
Buh bye!
