From unique snacks such as banana-flavored corn dogs to Japanese staples including soy sauce and miso paste, Silicon Valley’s newest Japanese supermarket has no shortage of tasty and functional finds.
Hashi Market, which was founded in New York in 2024, is opening its first West Coast location Friday in the former Sprouts location in Cupertino. The Japanese supermarket’s opening comes amid a recent surge of Asian supermarkets opening along the Peninsula, including Mega Mart in East Palo Alto, Osaka Marketplace in Foster City and Fugetsu in Santa Clara. While Hashi Market is a Japanese grocer, it also carries some Chinese, Korean and other Asian brands as well as a small selection of American products.
“Hashi, the word, means bridge,” said Justin Li, operations manager of Hashi Market. “So the goal and the mission statement of Hashi Market is to be that bridge where we’re bringing Japanese culture to the U.S.”
Li said Hashi Market carries some Japanese items not typically found at other Japanese markets, including those from Hokkaido. Hokkaido is famous for producing more than half of Japan’s milk, as well as producing milk that’s naturally sweet with an ultra creamy texture. Expect to find Hokkaido melon cakes, Hokkaido crackers and other products containing Hokkaido milk at Hashi Market, Li said.
Hashi Market has a large snack section, with Japanese favorites such as Pocky; pantry staples such as seaweed and soy sauce; a frozen section with mochi ice cream and taiyaki; a dairy section with various flavored soymilk; as well as produce, seafood, sushi and bakery sections. Non-food aisles include a beauty aisle with plenty of Canmake Tokyo products and a kitchen goods aisle with pans and plates.
Hashi Market also owns Marina Food Market in San Mateo and Marina Grocery in Milpitas and Union City and is currently evaluating whether or not to transition these stores into Hashi Markets. No timeline is set for potential renovation, Li said.
“All the stores that we acquire, those are definitely areas of interest (to convert to Hashi Market) … but we’re always constantly expanding,” Li said. “And if there’s a space that’s right for us, we’ll go for it.”
Friday’s grand opening will include a Yosakoi dance performance, live blue-fin tuna cutting and free sushi tastings.
Hashi Market, 20558 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino; @hashimarketus. Beginning Oct. 9, open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
