On April Fool’s day, the joke was on the rain clouds as the Alpine-West Menlo Little League celebrated opening-day ceremonies during a welcome break in the rainy weather.

A festive Ford Field in Portola Valley was the venue for minor and major league players, ages 9 to 12.

The event included the introduction of the 2005 all-star teams and the national anthem sung by the Woodside Elementary School chorus, and closed with an inspirational speech by longtime league supporter Charlie Adams.

Younger kids in the T-ball, pitching machine and coach-pitch leagues held their ceremonies at Woodside Elementary School’s McCovey Field. This program, which included the national anthem sung by Katie Lanin and Kathryn Smith, sixth-graders at Corte Madera School, closed with all of the young athletes running the bases in one continuous line.
