The 3rd Annual M-A Bears Golf Classic was held at Coyote Creek Golf Club on April 28. Parents and players from all around town participated in the event, which raised $7,000 for the M-A Bears boys golf teams.

The funds will be used for tournament fees, transportation costs, video training aids, clinics, guest speakers, equipment, and much more as M-A has evolved into one of the best funded and most aggressive public school programs in the area.

M-A Bears and M-A parents dominated the tournament. While First Place Gross went to a team that included Sacred Heart Prep’s Wes Payne and St. Francis’s Bryon Walsh, Second Place Gross was won by the team of M-A parent Eric Gananaian and M-A’s own senior golfers, Greg Sako, Jamie Walsh and Elliot Hume.

First Place Net went to the team of M-A’s Nick Sako, Brian Jordan, Alex Amato, and M-A Parent Fred Stanske. Second Place Net went to a co-ed team led by M-A parent Jane Hall.

Sophomore Nick Sako defended his Individual Low Gross title by posting a 6 under par 66 for the day. Elliot Hume took Longest Drive and M-A’s Peter Gruber won Closest to the Pin.

Tournament director and team parent Norm Hall did an outstanding job for the third straight year in making this a profitable and well-run event.

Coach Buff Giurlani was eager to point out that had the M-A varsity boys been competing in a team event, their team score would have been an impressive 374. Greg Sako and Jake Hall Toy each shot 76; Nick Sako, 66; Jamie Walsh, 82; and Elliot Hume, 74.
