Jeremiah Testa made sure Menlo College came out on the right side of Tuesday’s 73-70 Golden State Athletic Conference thrilling victory over William Jessup.
Testa, who helped Serra-San Mateo win a state title a year ago, hit a 3-pointer as time expired, the last of his game-high 26 points.
The Oaks extended their winning streak to three games against a Warriors team that knocked off NAIA No. 1 Biola earlier this year. It was a slugfest the entire game as both teams refused to yield.
William Jessup went on a 10-2 run to even the game at 70. Over the final five seconds, Ben Graham brought the ball up the far side of the court and found Testa on the wing.
Testa fired a moon shot, and, as the clock struck zero, it hit nothing but net to spark a celebration.
The first half was a grind the whole way. The largest lead of the half was three by William Jessup at 13-10.
There were 10 lead changes and six ties the rest of the half. The Oaks shot 36% in the first half compared to William Jessup’s 50%.
Menlo won the free-throw battle in the first half as they made 11 compared to the Warriors’ three and the game was tied, 30-30, at halftime.
William Jessup went on a 7-0 run to begin the second half. Menlo responded with a 15-4 run to take a four-point lead.
The Oaks eventually led, 61-48, before the Warriors went on a 10-0 run to close the gap and eventually knot things up before Testa’s heroics.
Testa, who off the bench to make eight of 11 shots, also added eight rebounds and made all seven of his free throws.
John Paine added 11 points and seven rebounds for Menlo, while Jared Wall chipped in seven points and Graham, who had the critical assist, and William Asplund each added six points.
It was an extremely physical affair as both teams combined for 36 fouls, including two technical fouls. The Oaks dominated from the free-throw line as they made 26 compared to William Jessup’s nine. Menlo also won the battle on the boards, 35-32.
Menlo (2-0) will look to continue their stellar play on Saturday as it takes on Vanguard. The Oaks are 0-3 against them. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
