The Menlo College women’s volleyball team captured two of the Golden State Athletic Conference top yearly honors, including Sacred Heart Prep grad Denise Shelton, who was named Coach of the Year.
Senior Moea Kekauoha was named Player of the Year and setter Pamela Dungo joined her on the all-GSAC team.
Vanguard, which shares the conference with Menlo, had three players named to the all-conference team, including Freshman of the Year Grace Fonville and fellow freshman Keelyn Kistner.
Sheldon guided the Oaks to their first-ever GSAC title despite having the smallest roster in the conference, with 10 healthy players available. Menlo won its final six regular-season matches to produce a co-championship and earn the top seed for the GSAC tournament, which gets underway at Menlo on Friday.
The Oaks received a bye into the semifinals and will meet either Hope International or The Master’s in Saturday’s 11 a.m. match. Menlo’s 14 conference wins matched the most in 11 years. The 2008 squad went 14-0 in the Cal Pac Conference. Sheldon, who has worked with the USA national program in a variety of capacities, has a 55-28 mark over her three seasons.
Kekauoha led the GSAC in kills, kills per set and hitting percentage, quite an achievement for an outside hitter. She has accumulated 429 kills, 429 digs, 32 aces and 37 blocks. She has recorded double-digit kills in all but two matches this season. Kekauoha was the conference Attacker of the Week three times and was named the NAIA national Attacker of the Week once.
Dungo led the conference in assists and assists per set. She became the first player in program history to collect over 1,000 career assists. She has 1,029 entering the weekend. Dungo also has 281 digs, 32 aces and 20 blocks. She set her career-high with 63 assists in a match against Arizona Christian.
