As a result of all the issues surrounding testing for the coronavirus, as well as facility availability, there will be no basketball league play this spring for San Mateo County schools in the Peninsula Athletic League.
Instead, schools will play only other members of their own school district. This change was brought about initially by the San Mateo Union High School District, which decided to have its six schools only play each other due to differing testing schedules, district by district.
That leaves Menlo-Atherton playing the other three schools in the Sequoia Union High School District — Woodside, Carlmont and Sequoia — up to four times each for a 12-game season.
So far, M-A basketball teams have only been able to engage in workouts with socially-distant rules in effect, individuals six feet apart and so forth.
“They’re going to do testing on their own Friday so that they can start practicing,’’ M-A co-athletic director Paul Snow said. “District testing will start on Wednesday and then on Monday and Wednesday each week after that.’’
Arranging games against teams from outside San Mateo County is a possibility if facility availability will allow. Athletic administrators at all schools are dealing with an unprecedented situation with so many sports playing at the same time due to the truncated window available for prep sports this spring.
