Junior Aidan Braccia scored 30 points as the Sacred Heart Prep boys basketball team overcame a slow start to beat visiting The King’s Academy, 78-55, in a West Bay Athletic League contest Wednesday.

Senior Harrison Carrington added 25 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer early in the second quarter, for the Gators (2-0), who host Pinewood on Friday night.

Braccia was 13-of-20 from the field (65 percent) and SHP shot 54 percent as a team.

The King’s Academy opened a 24-19 lead after the first quarter but SH Prep roared back in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead after Carrington’s 3-pointer.

TKA was held to 31 points over the final three quarters.

Teddy Purcell, fresh off the gridiron, distributed nine assists and made the only shot he took, a 3-pointer.

Braccia and RJ Stephens shared the team lead, each with seven rebounds. Sachit Sinha added six boards. Carrington blocked a pair of shots.

In another WBAL opener Wednesday, Rostand Olama Abanda scored 15 points to lead Priory past host Pinewood, 78-47.

Four other Priory players reached double figures in the victory. Ashton Axe netted 13, Tayo Sobemehin and David Ajanaku-Makun each had 11 and Zach Zafran scored 10.

Kiki Bailey scored 14 points to lead Pinewood, which travels to play at Sacred Heart Prep on Friday night.

Palo Alto dropped a 47-43 decision to host Los Altos in a SCVAL opener on Wednesday. The Vikings (0-2, 0-1) host the Eagles on Friday night.

Baseball

John Adrian Dioli and Conor York each drove in a run but host Sacred Heart Prep fell to Carlmont, 10-2, in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opener on Wednesday.

SHP will look to get back on track when it visits Carlmont on Friday.

Girls volleyball

Palo Alto downed visiting Homestead, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, in its Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division finale Wednesday.

The Vikings (9-1) honored their seniors before the game.

Gunn dropped a 25-19, 25-16, 26-24 decision to visiting Monta Vista in the final match of the season Wednesday.

The Titans, who won the Central Coast Section Division I championship as the El Camino Division titlists last year, found it difficult to maneuver through the SCVAL De Anza Division with one returning player.

Gunn celebrated Senior Day for Katie Kudriavtsev and Piper Chang to complete the shortened season.

Girls lacrosse

Emily Leschin scored five goals to help Sacred Heart Prep beat visiting Menlo-Atherton, 16-2, in a West Bay Athletic League opener Wednesday.

Ellie Noto added three goals and three assists for the Gators (1-1, 1-0), who play at Menlo on Friday afternoon. Genna Gibbons also scored three times and Lauren Hagerty scored twice and added two assists.

Menlo nearly came all the way back from a seven-goal deficit but just fell short in an 11-9 loss to host Mitty on Wednesday in another WBAL opener Wednesday. Brooke Stroh and Alta Knuff each scored three goals and Hailey Dunsby recorded six saves for the Knights.

Irene Kim, Kate Williams and Chloe Li each scored but Gunn fell to visiting Los Gatos, 6-3, in its SCVAL opener. Brindha Jaeger had another good game in goal with eight saves.

Softball

Maddie Ta pitched a six-hitter over five innings and Gunn beat host Monta Vista, 16-2, in a SCVAL El Camino Division opener Wednesday.

Ta also added two hits and drove in a run for the Titans (3-0, 1-0), who host Saratoga on Friday.

Kylie Liu led the charge with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Ingrid Lee drove in three runs, while Lauren Li, Emma Sachs and Ruth Jaquette each drove in a pair.
