It seems the Alpine-West Menlo Park 11-12 all-star baseball team enjoys early starts.
Hudson Watten was one of four players with two hits and he pitched the final inning in helping Alpine beat San Mateo American 6-4 in the District 52 All-Star Tournament at Palo Alto’s Middlefield Park on Sunday.
Watten, who started the game at shortstop, was also one of five players who recorded hits in the bottom of the first inning, when Alpine built a 5-0 lead.
Alpine scored six first-inning runs in Saturday’s win over Pacifica National. That’s 11 of the team’s 18 runs before the opposition has a chance to take a breath.
“These guys are fired up and ready to play,” Alpine coach Colin Cahill said. “They believe in themselves.”
It also helps when the starting pitchers do their jobs. Timothy Harrick joined first-game starter Fletcher Cahill in shutting out the other team through the first three innings.
Alpine has also played in the earliest game both days: 9 a.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The team gets a chance to sleep in Thursday, when Alpine plays either Belmont-Redwood Shores or Half Moon Bay in a winner’s bracket game at 4 p.m.
“We just want to compete,” Cahill said. “We want to go out and do our best.”
William Weiss got things going for Alpine, drawing a walk to open the first. Cahill, Watten, Matthew Majayla and Harrick each followed with a single. With two outs, Sullivan Fischbein singled and Kaenon Strick tripled to complete the early scoring.
Drew Parker walked with the bases loaded in the fourth to drive in the final run. Jax Cannon singled, Morgan Maletis hit into a fielder’s choice, and Cahill and Watten singled ahead of Parker.
Harrick gave way to Fischbein, who pitched a scoreless fourth despite facing a bases-loaded situation, and Watten to finish.
Cahill, Strick and Majayla joined Watten in the two-hit club. John Weaver and Majayla each doubled.
Palo Alto plays again Monday, facing Pacific American in an elimination game at 6 p.m.
