A trio of Stanford athletes collected medals on Sunday at the Tokyo Olympics and several others are in position to medal. There’s still a lot of action remaining over the final week. Stay tuned for further updates.
Fencing
Two-time NCAA foil champion and Stanford grad Alexander Massialas helped the United States beat Japan 45-31 on Sunday to earn the bronze medal in the team foil competition at Majuhari Meese Hall.

Massialas put the Americans on top from the opening bout, beating Japan’s Takahiro 5-4. The U.S. never trailed after Massialas scored the final point. He recovered from a 3-1 deficit.
Massialas also beat Yudai Nagano 5-2 and tied Kyosuke Matsuyama 5-5 on the final bout of the match.
The U.S. opened the day beating Germany 45-36 in which Massialas won all three of his bouts and gave the Americans the lead for good at 24-22.
The U.S. fell to the Russian Olympic Committee 45-41 in the semifinal. The ROC and France played for the gold medal.
Track and field

Stanford grad Steven Solomon recorded a personal best 44.94 to place in his heat of the men’s 400 meters at Olympic Stadium on Sunday.
Solomon, who competes for Australia and is a five-time national champion in the 400 meters, advances into the semifinals.
Solomon was a two-time All-American with the Cardinal track and field team and owns the school record in the 400 (45.36), which he accomplished, wearing a Stanford uniform, at the Australian national championships in 2014.
Swimming
Incoming Stanford freshmen Regan Smith and Torri Huske helped the U.S. women’s 4×100 free relay team earn a silver medal on Sunday.
The Americans were timed in 3:51.73, .13 seconds behind gold medalist Australia, which set an Olympic record. Smith swam the opening leg in 58.05 while Huske went 56.16 on the third leg.
Sailing
Stanford senior Luke Muller placed 12th in his ninth race of the Finn competition and completed the opening series with an 18th place showing. Muller ranks 13th overall.
Baseball
Former Major Leaguers Danny Valencia and Ian Kinsler helped Israel earn its first win of the Olympics, beating Mexico 12-5 Sunday.
Former Stanford pitcher Jeremy Bleich did not see any action for Israel. He appeared in the country’s first two games.
Valencia, who played for the Oakland Athletics, among other teams, hit a three-run homer during a five-run rally in the third. He also scored three times.
Kinsler, who played for the Texas Rangers, among others, doubled, walked and scored twice.
Water polo
Stanford alum Gurpreet Sohi scored a goal for the Canadian national team in a 16-12 loss to the Netherlands on Sunday at the Tatsumi Water Polo Center.
Hungary, which handed the U.S. a 10-9 setback on Wednesday, fell to China 11-9 on Sunday. Hungary finished 2-1-1 in the opening round.
The U.S. is 3-1 in Group B, while China is 2-2, The Russian Olympic Committee is 2-1-1 and host Japan went 0-4.
In Group A, Australia and Spain and the Netherlands all went 3-1, Canada was 1-3 and South Africa finished 0-4.
Canada and the U.S. advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.
Volleyball
Argentina downed the U.S. men’s national team 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 in a preliminary round match on Sunday at Ariake Arena.
Former Stanford standout Erik Shoji recorded 12 digs for the Americans, who fell to 2-3 in Pool B. Kawika Shoji also saw action as a substitute in the first set.
Argentina advances to the quarterfinals against Italy on Tuesday.
