Palo Alto’s top five boys cross country runners finished among the top 14 to win Tuesday’s second SCVAL meet of the season, this one on the Crystal Springs cross country course.
Mountain View had three runners among the top 10 and finished second, with 70 points. Paly scored 41.
Los Altos placed seventh, earning a tiebreaker with Gunn, as both teams scored 191 points.
Mountain View’s Emmanuel Leblond placed second, running a 15:14.6 over the 2.95 mile course, just over two seconds behind the winner.
Palo Alto’s Grant Morgenfeld and Eoin O’Connell finished third and fourth, respectively, in 15:27.9 and 15:55.8.
James Miller raced 16:02.7 to finish seventh for the Vikings. Mateo Fesslmeier (16:18.5) and John Bard (16:21.2) were 13th and 14th.
Evan Markelz (16:00.8) placed sixth overall for the Spartans. Nicholas Trepanier (16:10.4) was 10th.
Jake Seley was Gunn’s top runner, placing 11th in 16:15.6. Amir Benhagouga placed 26th as Los Altos’ top runner.

Palo Alto’s Elizabeth Fetter ran her own race in winning the individual title by over 30 seconds and the Vikings placed fifth overall with 123 points.
Fiona Bodkin led a trio of Los Altos runners in the top 10, helping the Eagles finish second, with 51 points. Los Gatos won with 38.
Bodkin (18:40.9) placed fifth, just edging past teammate Riley Capuano, who placed sixth in 18:41.7. Jaslenn Sidhu was 10th for Los Altos with a time of 19:16.4 and Ella Fadil was 13th in 19:20.5.
Paly freshman Kinga Czajkowska ran seventh in 18:58.5.
Julia Gentin (19:16.5) and Eliana Montgomery (19:16.8) were 11th and 12th in helping Mountain View finish third with 100 points. Gunn, with Neha Rishi leading the way, was seventh with 143 points. Rishi finished 15th in 19:33.6.
Water polo
The Sacred Heart Prep boys in the West Catholic Athletic League and Castilleja in the SCVAL De Anza Division each took care of business to remain unbeaten in league play.
SHP beat host Serra 16-4 as Hassan Hove scored four goals. Luke Bachler and Tyler Hogan each added three goals.
Gabby Lewis and Caitlyn Chau each scored four goals as Castilleja ran away from visiting Homestead 17-1. Janet Meng scored three times and Sutchie Ofori-Nyako recorded 17 saves.
The Gunn boys remain undefeated in SCVAL De Anza Division play, splashing past second-place Harker 13-11. Gunn is 8-4 overall, 7-0 in league.
Pooja Bucklin celebrated her return to action following an injury by scoring four goals in a 13-10 victory over Harker.
Bucklin, playing in her first league match, also added an assist and steal.
Kenza Ashworth scored six times for the Titans, who remain in third place in the SCVAL De Anza Division. Sawyer McKenna scored twice, had four assists and added four steals.
Nina Albers recorded three steals and drew two exclusions while Maddy Yeung also scored and blocked a shot.
The Palo Alto girls beat Los Altos 12-6 as Sami Lee scored five goals. Julia Ragno added two goals. Yasmin Friedrichowitz, Paige Henry and Milla Cleveringa were also among Viking scorers.
Palo Alto improved to 10-9 overall, 4-5 in SCVAL play.
Girls golf
Sacred Heart Prep (6-4, 6-3) received steady play from Gabby Srinivasan (44), Neha Lalia (46), Mischa Chaikovsky (48), Natasha Bamdad (48), and Alexandra Hull (49) to earn a 235-245 victory over Mercy Burlingame in a WBAL match at Crystal Springs GC.
Mercy’s Brooke Barron shot an even-par 36 to earn medalist honors.
Katie Spivakovsky earned medalist honors with a round of 40 as Menlo-Atherton topped Carlmont 266-295 in a PAL Bay Division match at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club.
Nathalie Benrey fired a round of 43 to help the Bears improve to 8-3.
Girls tennis
Gunn’s No. 2 doubles team of Noor Parak and Savana Chou won a 10-8 tiebreaker to clinch the Titans’ 4-3 victory over host Wilcox.
Gunn also needed an 11-9 tiebreaker from No. 4 singles Anjani Mirchandani to win the match.
Sarah Jung and the doubles team of Nimisha Sivaraman and Jennie Fan also won for Gunn.
St. Francis’ WCAL match with Presentation was postponed due to bomb threats at both schools.
Girls volleyball
Mountain View beat visiting Homestead 25-9, 25-11, 25-20 in a SCVAL De Anza Division on Tuesday
Mountain View 20-2 (6-1) remained a match behind league leader Los Gatos.
In the PAL Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton swept host Woodside 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 and improved to 11-11 overall.
Gunn lost in four sets at Monta Vista on Tuesday in a SCVAL De Anza Division match. The Titans host Los Altos at 6:45 p.m. Friday, about the same time the Gunn football team kicks off at Los Altos.
