In a wild game over on the coast Menlo-Atherton held on to defeat Half Moon Bay 47-46 in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opener for both teams.
Most of the offensive fireworks took place in a first half that ended with M-A leading 41-30.
The Bears (4-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 5-yard run by Thomas Taufui and a trick play in which Jeremiah Earby threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Moss, who recovered a HMB fumble the previous play.
But Half Moon Bay (1-4, 0-1) kept coming back.
“They probably rushed for 400 yards,” M-A coach Chris Saunders said. “Half Moon Bay is a lot better than their record. Their quarterback (William Moffitt) played his heart out.”
Part of the problem for the M-A defense was the absence of several key players, including linebacker Andrew Buck, and linemen Dane Fifita and Semisi Vainikolo. Sione Vaka, Buck’s counterpart at inside linebacker, played about half the snaps.
“The Oak Ridge game really beat us up,” Saunders said. “We had a freshman (Devin Hyde) wearing a cast playing the Mike linebacker. We played four or five guys who had never played before.”

Matt MacLeod, who was 17 of 19 for 274 yards in the first half alone, threw touchdown passes of 46 yards to Antoine Traversat, 34 yards to Moss and 9 yards to Earby, and ran 6 yards for another score. JoJo Flood added an 8-yard rushing touchdown.
Moss intercepted a pass in the end zone with 21 seconds remaining to play to secure the victory. MacLeod finished with 331 passing yards.
In other games, Woodside beat El Camino 18-10, Scotts Valley knocked off Sequoia 35-7 and Priory beat Trinity Christian 58-14.
