Both the boys and girls cross country teams from Saint Francis dominated action at the second West Catholic Athletic League meet Wednesday in Sunnyvale’s Baylands Park.

Jack Sloan was the top male runner, finishing second for the Lancers in 16:20.2, one of three St. Francis runners in the top five. Owen Kato placed fourth in 16:27.8, followed by Jamie Zepeda in fifth with a time of 16:28.8.

St. Francis recorded 53 points. Bellarmine was second with 68 Serra’s Tommy Rogers won the individual race with a time of 15:32.2.

Cheston Opsasnick placed 15th in 16:51.9 and Colin Pereira was 27th in 17:11.5.

The St. Francis girls did even better, placing all six of its runners among the top eight for a team score of 22. Mitty was second with 49.

With one senior among them, the Lancers appear to be set for a few years. Freshman Sabrina Zanetto won in a tight race with Mitty’s Evie Marheineke, also a freshman. Zanetto won the race with a time of 18:40.6, just under two seconds faster than Marheineke.

Both runners were pushed by St. Francis’ Lillian Kaelber, who finished third in 18:44.7. Another Mitty runner was fourth and then it was four consecutive St. Francis finishers: Anna Fawcett (19:01.2), Christel Elkins (19:14.3), Hinako Yamamoto (19.14.9) and Caitlin Calley (19:17.0).
