The Central Coast Section football seedings came out Sunday morning with most local teams seeded where expected, but with a couple of surprises included as well.

St. Francis (9-0) is the No. 1 seed in Division I, as expected, and will host Aptos on Friday at 7 p.m.

But Menlo-Atherton (8-2) received the No. 5 seed in Division I, rather than the 4 seed coach Chris Saunders was expecting. And the difference between being seeded fourth or fifth is pretty immense. M-A will travel to play No. 4 Salinas (8-0) on Friday rather than getting a home game.

“No playoff point system will be perfect,” Saunders said. “But using the Calpreps system is pretty egregious, using a third party to determine playoff seedings. That’s how Salinas got extra points to rank ahead of us.”

Salinas is ranked 51st in the state by Calpreps, M-A 64th.

In Division V, Los Altos got in and Gunn was the odd team out after a three-way tie for first place in the SCVAL’s El Camino Division, which gets two automatic berths in the playoffs. Cupertino had the most CCS power points and Gunn the second-most, so initially it seemed Los Altos’ season was over.

But the SCVAL bylaws state that head-to-head results would determine the second auto qualifier, and Los Altos defeated Gunn 34-7. So Los Altos got in and Gunn was left out.

Los Altos (7-3) received the No. 6 seed in Division V and will play at Soquel, Friday at 7 p.m.

“We’re happy, we’re excited,” Los Altos coach Dave DeGeronimo said. “The kids get to play another game.”

Gunn, understandably, was dismayed.

“I think the process to determine that is unfair,” Gunn coach Jason Miller said. “I’m writing a proposal to change the bylaw to have ties broken by CCS points alone. The kids are disappointed, but the system is what it is. We’ll hold our chins up and use it to motivate us next year.”

Menlo School (10-0) was seeded No. 4 in Division II and will play host to Half Moon Bay, Saturday at 1 p.m.

Palo Alto (5-5) is the fifth seed in Division III and will play at Christopher in Gilroy on Friday at 7 p.m. Mountain View (5-5) is the No. 7 seed in the bracket and will play at Live Oak, also Friday at 7.

Sacred Heart Prep (3-7) is the No. 3 seed in Division IV and will host Alisal on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
