Jason Armstrong has been named Sacred Heart Prep’s assistant principal of athletics, effective July 1, 2022.

Armstrong, who has been the school’s assistant athletics director for three years, succeeds Frank Rodriguez, who will be stepping away from overseeing the SHP athletic programs at the end of the academic year.
Under Rodriguez’s guidance, SHP has grown into one of the most respected athletic programs in California; 70 percent of the student body participate in at least one sport, and SHP “Gators” have earned over 50 Central Coast Section (CCS) team championships during his tenure.
“I’m thrilled that Jason Armstrong will be overseeing the athletic programs at SHP,” said Rodriguez. “He’s well-versed in the mission of the school, and regarded across campus as smart, responsive, hardworking, and student-focused. Student-athletes not only like him a great deal but have the utmost respect for him as well. He’s the perfect athletic administrator to lead our Gator Nation.”
Armstrong has roots at Sacred Heart Schools dating to when he attended St. Joseph’s School (the former name of SHS’s elementary school). At the time, Sacred Heart Prep did not have a high school football program and Armstrong moved down the street to Menlo School, where he excelled in both football and baseball.
Armstrong attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas as a recipient of the prestigious President’s Scholarship, eventually graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration. He became one of Trinity’s top baseball players as a four-time All-Conference selection player, a league and NCAA West Region Player of the Year, and a first team All-American.
Armstrong was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and advanced through the club’s minor league system including an AA-level All-Star appearance and team MVP award. After the 2008 season, Armstrong returned to his alma mater as associate head baseball coach at Trinity, as well as coaching in the Cape Cod Summer Baseball League, a training ground for many of today’s Major League Baseball stars.
From 2009 to 2016, Armstrong coached baseball at UC Davis and San Jose State University where he also led data analytics, a leadership development program, and a capital campaign. At the same time, he earned an M.S. from Ohio University in sports science and coaching education.
Armstrong returned to Sacred Heart as sports information director, increasing the traditional and social media imprint of the school’s sports programs, served as director of external and summer programs, and as athletics performance coach for SHP’s football team.
Armstrong played important roles in projects including College Sports Night, the new Hall of Fame display in McGanney Sports Center, and assisted in coach hiring and evaluation.
All-Schools Athletics Director Bret Simon said Armstrong’s experience positions him for success.
“Coach Armstrong, through his work ethic and expertise, has become a trusted and invaluable member of SHP’s athletics team,” he said. “I am thrilled that he will be carrying on the legacy of excellence developed under Frank Rodriguez’s watch.”
