Palo Alto junior Elizabeth Fetter turned in one of the top individual performances among local runners Saturday at the state cross country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Fetter finished sixth in the girls Division I race with a time of 17:44.5, the 16th fastest time overall out of 977 girls that ran in all five divisions.

“She had a great outing,” Palo Alto coach Michael Davidson said. “She wanted to make a statement and had the mindset that she was ready to go.”

Los Altos’ Lauren Soobrian came in not far behind Fetter in the D-I race, taking 11th in 18:02.4. She led a strong performance by the Los Altos team which placed sixth, the highest finish for a Central Coast Section team in girls Division I since 1998.

“We were delighted,” Los Altos coach Stephanie MacKenzie said. “A fantastic day for them.”

Soobrian was coming back from an injury in late August.

“Lauren is a special talent,” MacKenzie said. “She’s still only running three days a week. It’s incredible to see the improvement she’s made in two weeks since CCS.”

Fetter and Soobrian, 27th overall, were the second and third-fastest girls from the CCS, after Ashlyn Boothby of Scotts Valley.

The Los Altos combined team time of 1:34.35 was 11th overall among 118 girls teams.

St. Francis, which placed fourth in the girls D-II team standings, was 14th overall at 1:35.37. The Lancers were led by freshman Sabrina Zanetto (18:30.2), 72nd overall, sixth among CCS runners.

Samira Kennedy placed second in the girls D-V race (18:30.2) to lead Castilleja to a fourth-place team finish. Kennedy’s time was 70th overall and fifth-fastest among CCS girls.

Sacred Heart Prep was 16th in girls D-IV, led by Julia Soderbery (23rd, 18:57.3).

Menlo-Atherton’s Katie Lorenz and Woodside’s Elle Marsyla, like Fetter, ran after qualifying as individuals at the CCS finals. Lorenz (18:32.3) was 79th overall and seventh among CCS girls. Marsyla had a time of 18:32.9, 81st overall and eighth among CCS entrants.

On the boys side, Palo Alto placed 11th in the Division I race, a little bit of a disappointment to Davidson, who had to sub in two runners due to illness.

Still, the Vikings, who finished just ahead of 12th-place Bellarmine, had the fastest team time (1:21.21) of any CCS team, 21st among 118 boys teams.

Mountain View, which took 14th in boys D-I (1:21.46), was paced by Emmanuel Leblond, who finished 12th in 15:28.1, 32nd overall out of 986 runners and third among CCS entrants.

Menlo School placed seventh in boys D-IV with a team time of 1:23.03, led by Justin Pretre (14th, 15:46.3) and freshman Landon Pretre (17th, 15:54.6).

Woodside placed 17th in boys D-II with a team time of 1:24.10 while St. Francis was 21st (1:25.32).
