The Palo Alto boys soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Cupertino in a non-league game Wednesday.

The Vikings host Menlo at 4 p.m. Friday.

Menlo lost to Aragon 1-0 in another non-league game. Aragon scored in the final two minutes.

The Knights got strong performances from seniors Colin Thomas in goal and Alexander Chen in the back, as well as junior Aidan Skinner in midfield.

“It was our first game against a talented team which had already had a played a few times, and it showed,” Menlo coach Marc Kerrest said. “There were some clear positives to build on. It’s a long season, and we look to bounce back Friday.”

In another game, Menlo-Atherton topped host St. Francis 1-0.

Stanford-bound Allie Montoya scored a pair of goals and added an assist in leading Mountain View past visiting Willow Glen 6-0 on Wednesday.

Karena Shah, Mackenzie Fry, Freyja Arnarsdottir and Juno Winnegar also scored for the Spartans (1-0), who play Menlo School at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Firebird Classic at Fremont High.

Laila Edris added a pair of assists and Josie Penix also assisted on a goal.

Mountain View, 2020 Central Coast Section Division I champion, did not allow a shot on goal.

Isabella Heilman scored three goals and Elina Saab-Sundin also scored in Gunn’s 4-1 victory over Newark Memorial on Wednesday. Gunn (3-0) hosts Hillsdale at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Gunn has outscored opponents 21-2 thus far.

In other matches, Priory opened its season with a 7-0 victory over Design Tech and Woodside scored late to beat Palo Alto 1-0.

Valentina Saric scored 27 points and Priory opened its girls basketball season with a 57-38 victory over El Camino in the first round of the Kelly Shea Gallo Memorial Tournament at Mills High Wednesday.

Sunishka Kartic added 20 points, making all seven of her field goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Priory broke the game open in the second half. Saric was 10-of-13 from the field as Priory shot 81 percent as a team.

In another first round game, Sacred Heart Prep dropped a 50-33 decision to Salinas.

In a non-league game, Notre Dame Belmont beat Castilleja, 55-9.
