The Pinewood girls basketball team hit the ground running Tuesday, opening a big lead early in beating Los Altos 63-16 in a first round game of the Joe Schram Holiday Classic at St. Francis High.
On the other side of the bracket, the host Lancers opened the tournament with a 75-21 victory over San Luis Obispo. St. Francis (9-0) meets Aragon in Wednesday night’s semifinal.
Elle Ladine scored 12 points, had 13 rebounds and six assists to lead Pinewood (3-1), which played its first game in 17 days. The Panthers meet Marin Catholic on Wednesday.
Aragon beat Riordan 61-54 and Marin Catholic topped Capuchino 45-29 in other first-round games.
Jade Ramirez added 11 points and matched Kaile Cruz with a team-high five steals. Cruz also recorded six assists.
Alex Falco added 10 points for the defending Central Coast Section Open Division champion Panthers. Skylar Chui grabbed seven rebounds.
Lucas Black scored 15 points, one of four players to reach double figures, and Palo Alto beat Newark Memorial 64-44 in the first round of the Holiday Classic boys division.
Matt Corrigan and Ryan Lykken each scored 12 points for Paly (6-3), which meets host St. Francis in Wednesday’s semifinal round. Nikhil Majeti added 10 points and Noah Chen led a strong defensive showing.
St. Francis defeated Monterey 69-56 to reach the semis.
Elsewhere:

The Sacred Heart Prep boys advanced to the championship game of the Cactus Jam at Sunnyslope High in Phoenix with a 60-43 victory over Start (Ohio) on Tuesday.
Emmer Nichols scored 17 points to lead SHP (6-1), which plays Cleveland Heights in the title tilt. Aidan Braccia added 12 points while Jake York and Sam Norris combined for another 17 points.
Also in the Cactus Jam, Menlo-Atherton beat Columbia River 53-23 and will play for fourth place.
In a non-league girls basketball, Jessica Fiske and Katherine Garr each scored 10 points and Palo Alto rallied in the fourth quarter to beat host Aptos 43-40.
Palo Alto (8-1) beat Aptos 59-42 at the Monte Vista Christian Tournament in Watsonville last month.
The Vikings are scheduled to play at Soquel at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The Menlo boys dropped a 58-50 decision to Santa Fe Christian in the second round of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic on Tuesday.
The Knights (5-2) trailed 33-17 at halftime and rallied the fourth quarter, with Daniel Solomon scoring 15 of his game-high 24 points.

Santa Fe Christian (7-5) held on to advance to the Senator Division semifinals. Menlo plays Patrick Henry at 5:25 pm on Wednesday.
The Mountain View boys fell to Saratoga 45-35 in the second round of the Aptos/Warriors Invitational.
The Woodside boys fell to Benicia 58-23 at the Pleasant Grove Tournament.
The Menlo-Atherton girls dropped a 50-38 decision to Castro Valley at the Newark Memorial Tournament.
Girls soccer

Freshman Laila Edris scored four goals to help Mountain View beat Bullard 6-0 in Fresno on Tuesday.
Isabella Walker recorded a pair of assists and Charis Toney was key in keeping Bullard off the scoreboard.
Mountain View (6-0-1) hosts Menlo-Atherton at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The scheduled match between Los Altos and host Valley Christian was postponed.
