The Sequoia High girls soccer team has finished third twice since returning to the Peninsula Athletic League’s more competitive Bay Division in 2019-20.
This might be the season Sequoia gives powerhouse Woodside some competition.
The Ravens certainly controlled play during Tuesday’s 4-0 non-league victory over visiting Capuchino.
Freshman Teagan Tokheim recorded a hat trick as Sequoia peppered Capuchino’s goal with shot after shot while Sequoia goalies Gabby Holloszy and Isabella Burns hardly had much company during the match.
Nathalie Franco, Reese McKeon and Nina Mills each had shots dent the goal post while Cap’s goalie came up with several big saves.
Addison Haws also scored a goal and recorded an assist for Sequoia (5-1), which matched its win total from last year’s 12-game season.
Sequoia will continue to refine things with a 4:30 p.m. non-league game at home against Terra Nova on Thursday.
The Ravens open league season against Menlo-Atherton next week.
“I’m happy with the way things are turning out,” Sequoia coach Melissa Schmidt said. “We gotten some good results against tough teams.”
Holloszy and Burns had it easy because of players like Charlotte Dugoni, Aminah Evans, Raquel Ladabaum and Samantha Laing, who helped control things in their own zone.
In another non-league contest, Woodside downed host Terra Nova 3-1 to remain undefeated at 7-0.
Boys soccer
Sequoia and host Carlmont played to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday. The Ravens (3-1-3) travel to play Woodside at 4 p.m. Friday.
Woodside beat visiting Luis Valdez Leadership Academy 4-0 as Diego Ruiz scored twice and recorded an assists.
Hugo Gallegos and Pierce Musladin also scored and Jonathon Fuentes Lopez had two assists. Juan Saravia also had an assist.
Boys basketball
Los Altos beat visiting Homestead 53-45 in a SCVAL De Anza Division contest Tuesday.
The Eagles (11-2, 2-0) are scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. road game at Santa Clara on Friday.
Mountain View opened league play with a 51-32 win over visiting Milpitas. The Spartans (9-4, 1-0) are scheduled to play at Palo Alto on Friday night.
Pinewood fell to visiting The King’s Academy 69-58 in a West Bay Athletic League opener Tuesday.
Pinewood (5-3, 0-1) also had its Thursday game at Menlo postponed and is tentatively scheduled to play at Crystal Springs Uplands on Saturday.
The rest of the WBAL schedule was postponed: Menlo at Priory, Harker at Sacred Heart Prep and Eastside Prep at Crystal Springs Uplands.
Girls basketball
Gunn rallied in the fourth quarter before coming up short and losing to visiting Notre Dame San Jose 63-57 in a non-league game Tuesday.
Freshman Vallory Kuelker scored a season high of 33 points, which included five 3-pointers and an 8-of-11 performance from the foul line. Mollie Kuelker, Kean Annette Tong, Zara Wang, Carmel Tong and Beverly Lamis accounted for 24 points.
The Titans (5-3) play open league play in Cupertino on Wednesday night.
East Palo Alto Academy opened Private Schools Athletic League play with a 41-24 victory over visiting DCP Alum Rock on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0) are scheduled to play a 5 p.m. game at Mountain View Academy on Thursday.
