Senior wrestlers Darren Nhieu and Jack Hecht each won individual titles in helping Mountain View finish fourth in Saturday’s Jim Root Invitational at Prospect High.

Nhieu, who went 5-0 at 126 pounds, and Hecht, who finished 3-0 at 160 pounds, combined to score 58 of the Spartans’ 113 1/2 points.

Nhieu defeated Silver Creek’s Ahmad Romal 3-2 in the championship match. Hecht beat Lynbrook’s Christopher Bhardwaj 13-7 for his title.

Senior Calvin Conway, who placed third (4-1) at 220 pounds, and junior Rohan Kumar, fifth (3-2) at 113 pounds, combined for another 30 team points. Sophomore Nolan Pham placed eighth at 120 pounds.

Mountain View’s junior Brandon Lien pinned Gunn’s Myles Stottz at 1:34 in the first round of the 132-pound bracket and both went on to win a consolation title, with Lien earning the A title and Stottz the B title. They had also wrestled against each other in a dual meet on Thursday.

Gunn’s Ethan Casale placed fourth at 152 pounds and teammate Jonathan Mar was seventh at 120 pounds. The Titans finished 22nd out of 36 teams.

De La Salle won the team title with 208 1/2 points, followed by Lemoore and Alisal.

Andrew Croft and Gavin Scafidi also scored for Mountain View.

Battle for the Belt

St. Francis wrestlers Bryce Luna (120) and Ryan Luna (138) each placed fourth in their respective weight classes at the prestigious meet held at Temecula Valley High over the weekend.
