The Menlo-Atherton boys basketball team played textbook defense over the final 33 seconds of its 52-46 road victory over Carlmont on Monday night.

As a result, the Bears (13-6, 6-2) put themselves right back into the thick of the Peninsula Athletic League South Division race.

Carlmont (11-6, 6-1) dropped its first league game and now holds the slimmest of leads over Burlingame, M-A and Hillsdale, which are all within a game of each other in the standings.

The Scots sank the first basket and then M-A went on an 11-0 run and never gave up the lead the rest of the way.

At one point in the fourth quarter, Ryan Anderson blocked a shot attempt that led to Jalen Williams hitting a pair of free throws and putting the Bears ahead 43-34 with 5:32 left to play in the contest.

Carlmont made a run, cutting the lead to 47-46 with under 36 seconds remaining. The Scots never took another shot.

Anderson sank a pair of free throws and M-A got the ball back on a Carlmont turnover. Williams then made one of two free throws. Anderson stole the ball and went in for a layup with under 20 seconds to play. Williams then stole the ball and the Bears were able to run out the clock.

M-A has won nine of its last 11 games, with one of those losses at home to Carlmont, heading into Wednesday night’s game at San Mateo.

Sacred Heart Prep had little trouble maintaining its stranglehold on first place in the West Bay Athletic League, beating Pinewood 100-30 as Emmer Nichols scored 21 points.

The Gators (15-3, 8-0) scored the game’s first 12 points and never looked back.

The 6-foot-6 Nichols and 6-7 Sam Norris dominated the boards as SHP built an overwhelming 57-15 halftime advantage.

Pinewood (8-8, 3-6) hurt itself with turnovers and rarely got a second chance on offense.

LJ Quattlebaum hit a jumper with 2:29 remaining to play to put SHP at the century mark.

Aidan Braccia added 19 points. Norris put up 13 and Sachit Sinha added 10.

In the West Catholic Athletic League, St. Francis completed a two-game sweep of Valley Christian with a 78-54 road victory Monday night.

The Lancers (12-7, 4-5) won Friday night’s game at home, 69-52.

Menlo-Atherton pretty much mirrored the boys game in its home victory, 46-43, over Carlmont.

The Scots (9-9, 4-4) tied the game at 43 with 2:40 remaining to play and never scored afterward.

Venise Sanft scored to put the Bears (9-9, 2-5) ahead to stay. Fiona Steinmetz, who led M-A with 15 points, added a free throw down the stretch.

Steinmetz scored 10 of her points in the third quarter. Summer Prescott added 12 points.

Tess Statkiewicz and Helena Warner, who combined to score 16 points, combined for 10 first-quarter points.
