The opening of Menlo Park’s children’s center, originally slated for March 25, has been delayed. But it may just be a few weeks.

Michael Taylor, acting community services director, said there have been “minor changes” in the center’s design, but stressed that the changes are “no big deal.” He said a wall in the center’s original plans has been removed.

The projected opening date was “optimistic,” Mr. Taylor said. He said the city wants to open the center in mid-April, but is awaiting safety inspections by the fire marshal and the child care division of the California Department of Social Services.

“We think the plan will work out,” said Mr. Taylor.

Art Morimoto, supervising engineer for the project, could not be reached for comment.

Plans to build the children’s center at the current site — the former police station — sparked a public outcry in 2003. Previous plans called for a brand new $6.7 million center, but council members Lee Duboc, Nicholas Jellins and Mickie Winkler endorsed plans for smaller center in the renovated police station. The project’s cost is $3.4 million.
