San Mateo County has come a long way since April 19, 1856, when it officially seceded from Gold Rush San Francisco as a result of political shenanigans and back-room deals.

A gala musical revue, “Sounds of the Sesquicentennial,” will celebrate the occasion Wednesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. at the historic Fox Theatre, 2215 Broadway in Redwood City.

The public is invited to wear period clothes, any period, to spice up the party.

Eight ensembles including musicians, singers and dancers will guide the audience through 150 years of county music and memories. They are: Tom Rigney and Flambeau; John “Broadway” Tucker Band; Mariachi Los Cachorros & Grupo Aztlan de San Francisco; John McEuen — string wizard of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; Keith Greeninger; Jazz Birds; and Sean Seman.

Tickets ranging from $20 to $30 may be obtained by calling 369-4119 or at foxdream.com.

The concert is part of a year-long schedule of events celebrating the county’s sesquicentennial. For more information, call 299-0104, or go to smc150.org.
