I have never before written a letter to any editor, but I was so appalled by the coldness of Mr. Hessel’s letter last week regarding the small memorial flowers on Sand Hill Road that I could not help but respond.
How dare anyone judge someone else’s expression of profound grief? Who are you to decide what is appropriate and what is not? “More than two months has elapsed,” he writes. Two months is nothing. For anyone who has ever lost a loved one, no matter what the circumstances, the emotions involved do not simply disappear after a designated amount of time.
If it gives Mrs. Smith some small comfort to tend to some flowers in the area where her husband died, how can you not feel some human compassion for her?
Mr. Hessel, if you would like to erect a small memorial on Sand Hill Road to someone you once lost, go right ahead. In the meantime, please keep your eyes on the road and straight in front of you, where they belong. Your risk of being offended will lessen dramatically.
