Art in Action, a California nonprofit that pushes visual arts education in schools, will hold its third annual Atelier d’Artistes benefit luncheon on March 7, to raise funds for local arts programs, said AIA spokesperson Carolyn Digovich.
The event, which will be held at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club in Menlo Park, will be presented by ABC Anchor Carolyn Johnson, co-anchor of ABC7 TV news.
“With budget cuts in our state, this program is one of the only quality arts program left, especially in under-served schools,” she said. “Creative thinking, which is the backdrop of the arts, is going to be the most critical asset for children, especially going into this job market.”
The luncheon will feature sculptor Fletcher Benton. Student artists from Orion School in Redwood City will create sculptures with guests, and noted local artists will demonstrate techniques, share stories, and sell their work. There will also be a silent auction, Ms. Digovich said.
Arts in Action was founded in 1982 by an art history teacher with the intention of establishing quality art education in the classroom, according to its website. The organization provides curriculum handbooks and trains local school teachers, said Ms. Digovich. Today, 11 schools in the areas of Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside and Portola Valley participate in the program.
“They are not the same lessons as the ones taught in an average art class,” said Ms. Digovich. “There’s a lot of history and there’s always a hands-on project. After this, they can go to any museum and really understand what they’re looking at.”
