Caltrans has announced that Highway 84 near Woodside is expected to fully open in late May, “provided good weather and material shortages don’t cause delays,” according to the transit agency’s latest update on April 19.
The repair of the two-lane highway has been in the works since March 2023. Caltrans has maintained one-way traffic control since June 2023.
Crews are working on permanent lower slop repairs involving erosion control, backfilling and completing the drainage system. On the upper slope, they are working on staining the architectural rock wall mock-up.
The update states that upcoming work includes completing details on the rock wall and repairing roadways.

When asked through our State and County representatives if with the reconstruction of the road if possible to widen the road to accommodate saver routes for bicyclists Caltrans said they were unable to widen the road given the space constraints of the construction site but looking at the pictures that doesn’t seem to be the case.
When building roads what are the priorities? Is it ok to only focus on one users groups needs?
KR – unfortunately, the California legislature has required specifications for bike and pedestrian lanes on state highways. Given the incredible natural constraints like steep slopes along this part of the highway, this just wasn’t possible without a much larger and far more expensive project. Caltrans is spending millions adding bicycle lanes along several miles of Woodside Road between the 280 and 101 freeways which is a more dangerous and more frequently used area. Priorities.
