Maria Paz, a Chilean-born, Oakland-based sculptor, will give an online artist talk on Friday, March 5, at 5 p.m. The event is part of the Palo Alto Art Center’s “Where the Heart Is: Contemporary Art by Immigrant Artists” exhibition.

Paz is a self-taught sculptor whose work deals with identity and her experiences as an immigrant in the U.S. “By painting visions of Chile, her ancestors and her higher self, Paz archives her personal history on her ceramic vessels as an act of resilience,” according to the Palo Alto Art Center.

In addition to the free March 5 talk, Paz and the Palo Alto Art Center will also hold a virtual painting-on-clay workshop on Mondays, March 15-22 at 6 p.m. Paz will guide participants on choosing symbols and imagery to paint on ceramic pieces. Kits including two bisqued 10-inch tiles and an underglaze project pack are available from the Art Center for $25. Participation in the two-part workshop costs $75 for Palo Alto residents, $86.25 for non-residents.
