The Portola Art Gallery celebrates the opening of its October exhibit, “Meraki,” featuring works by ceramics artist Misako Kambe. The show highlights a variety of wood-fired, soda-fired ceramics and high-fired tableware.

The show’s title is “a Greek word meaning to do something with passion, pride, and care; or a labor of love,” according to a press release about the show. Kambe creates functional and decorative pieces, including vases, plates and teapots, that highlight intricate detailing and subtle colors.
Born and raised in Tokyo Japan, Kambe began her artistic career in a Kimono studio, where she learned traditional paper-cutting techniques, and moved to Silicon Valley in 1997, according to her website. She began taking ceramics courses at Foothill College in the late ’90s.
Meraki” will be on view through Oct. 31 at Portola Art Gallery at Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park. portolaartgallery.com
