Seismologist Mary Lou Zoback will talk about the great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 — and its lessons for today — in a free public lecture Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m. in the Building 3 conference room at the U.S. Geological Survey, 345 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park.

Dr. Zoback’s topic will be “Lessons Learned, Lessons Forgotten, and Future Directions in Earthquake Science.”

A senior research scientist with the Earthquake Hazards Team based in Menlo Park, Dr. Zoback is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and chair of the steering committee for the 1906 Earthquake Centennial Alliance.

French broom pull at Cow Hill

Energetic volunteers are needed to pull up invasive French broom out of Cow Hill on Stanford land near Los Trancos Creek on Saturday, April 1, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Workers should wear sturdy clothes, bring hat and sunscreen, and be prepared for poison oak. The Watershed Council, a project of Acterra, will provide work gloves, tools, snacks and drinks.

Breakfast focuses on literacy and health

Literacy and Health will be the focus of the 10th annual Literacy Network Breakfast on Thursday, April 6, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at Dominic’s restaurant by the golf course at Coyote Point in San Mateo.

Three speakers will address ways that literacy promotes health. They are Claifornia State Librarian Susan Hildreth, who will discuss “Health, Literacy and Libraries;” community pediatrician Dr. Jose Manuel Pena, whose subject will be “Literacy Skills and the Underserved;” and research scientist Dr. Colleen Crangle, who will talk about “Health Communication for Adult Learners.”

The breakfast is being sponsored by First 5 San Mateo County, the Peninsula Library System, and the San Mateo County Library Committee.
