The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is hosting “The Wonderful World of Rats” on Sunday, April 2, and a week-long “Animal Camp” for 9-12 year olds from April 10-14.

The “rat fest” will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the PHS/SPCA Auditorium at 12 Airport Blvd. in San Mateo.

“People can drop in for information on rat care, to buy supplies, check out children’s activities and meet adorable rats available for adoption,” says Scott Delucchi, a spokesman for the humane society.

Admission is free.

A week later, PHS/SPCA will hold the animal camp. Kids will learn about responsible pet care and humane treatment of animals, says Mr. Delucchi.

Activities include touring the shelter, learning basic obedience training with dogs, and observing surgeries in the spay/neuter clinic.

The cost is $175. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. For information, call the Humane Education Department at 340-7022, ext. 369.

Household hazardous waste day in April

Residents of Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside and Portola Valley who have unwanted hazardous household materials — such as herbicides, pesticides, motor oil, batteries and paint — will have a chance to safely dispose of them, free of charge, on Saturday, April 8.

Participation is by appointment only; a limited number of appointments are available and they can go quickly. To make an appointment, call 363-4718 or go to smhealth.org/hhw/appt.

After an appointment is confirmed, details and directions will be sent either by regular mail or e-mail.
