What type are you?

The Stanford Blood Center will hold a free blood-typing and National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) registration drive on Tuesday, June 20, at Mitchell Park Bowl, 600 East Meadow Drive in Palo Alto.

The drive, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., will coincide with the Twilight Concert, featuring the Celtic rock group, Tempest.

The “Are you my type” blood center event allows people to find out their blood type, register for the NMDP and have a free cholesterol screening. Minority NMDP donors are urgently needed, said Michele Hyndman of the blood center.

A person must be 18 years old and give a small tube of blood to find out their blood type. Results will be mailed to participants. To register for the NMDP, a person must be between 18 and 60, give a small blood sample, and be willing to donate to any patient in need. People can choose either or both screenings.

Screenings will be done in the blood center’s “bloodmobile,” which will be parked at Mitchell Park. For more information, call 723-7831, or visit bloodcenter.stanford.edu.

Consolidating student loans

Because interest rates on federal student loans will rise July 1, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-Atherton) is urging parents and students to lock in lower interest rates now.

Student borrowers who consolidate before July 1 may be eligible to lock in a rate as low as 4.75 percent. After July 1 the rates will climb to 6.625 percent for continuing students, 7.25 for graduates and 8 percent for parents.

Information about consolidation can be found on Congresswoman Eshoo’s Web site at eshoo.house.gov.
