The Menlo Park City School District and Portola Valley School District were each awarded the 2024 J. Russell Kent Awards by the San Mateo County School Board Association. This award recognizes innovation and replicable programs being implemented across educational institutions, according to a press release from both districts.

MPCSD was recognized for its Community Reads Initiative, a platform that adds new voices to the classroom during read-alouds and invites input from diverse families in this educational experience. The initiative started three years ago to enhance visibility of students from different backgrounds.

PVSD was recognized  for Ormondale School’s garden education program, “Garden Thyme,” a program that aims to enhance student engagement and learning through healthy eating and gardening. It was started over a decade ago by second grade teachers and local gardener and parent volunteer, Brook Coffee. The garden has now expanded to all students and the district has plans to extend it to Corte Madera School.
