125th Wedding Anniversary
The Menlo Park Historical Association and the Museum of American Heritage will be celebrating the 125th wedding anniversary of Helen Hopkins and Augustus Taylor on from 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the Hopkins Mansion on the grounds of Vallombrosa Retreat Center.
Hopkins and Taylor were married at the mansion in 1900. Hopkin’s father, Edward Whiting Hopkins, purchased the estate in 1880 and raised his five children there.
E.W. Hopkins was treasurer of the Central Pacific Railroad, which was a key company involved in the first U.S. transcontinental railroad that his uncle founded with Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Collis Huntington.
More information about the event, which includes antique valuations, exhibits and raffles is available on the historical association’s Facebook page.
Library card submissions
The Menlo Park Library is accepting submissions for redesigned library cards. Anyone who lives in or attends school in Menlo Park is eligible to submit designs. The theme is “My Library Adventure in Menlo Park.” The submissions will be reviewed by a panel of city staff and stakeholders who will select the final designs.
Designs may be digital or hand drawn and must be original work without the use of generative AI.
More information is available on the city’s website.
Meet new fire marshal
The Atherton Disaster and Preparedness Team will be hosting a meet-and-greet with the Menlo Park Fire District’s new fire Marshal on Sept. 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Atherton Council Chambers.
Fire Marshal Gage Schlice will discuss fire risk, emergency response plans and emergency preparedness. Pizza will be served. The team asks that residents RSVP by sending an email to susan.w.warren1952@gmail.com with the total number in their party so there is enough food for everyone.
